In this course I learned how to organize and plan thematic units involving mathematics.  Creating a bridge between subjects was a great way to ensure that students gained the greatest learning experience.  I learned a great way to teach mathematics utilizing technology to engage students.  I was able to teach lessons working with kindergarten students from Bluffview Elementary.  Differentiated instruction was vital in order to keep all students engaged.  Towards the end of my course work I shared my lesson with the class by presenting it to them using powerpoint.

I have selected to share my concept lesson plan titled: Roll It Again! for numbers and operations.  At this point in my pre student teaching I developed great relationships with my students and I knew what their needs were.  I knew that with this particular class differentiation was  vital.  Therefore I utilized centers to ensure that the students needs were met and it was easier to teach small groups the math lesson.  The students enjoyed the variety of knowledge gained from centers and enjoyed being able to learn in a comfortable environment.

Name:  Tammie Yazzie                Grade:  Kindergarten

Subject:     Math                                         Topic:  Roll It Again! Numbers & Operations

New Mexico Academic Standards:

          K/K-4 Number & Operations

Standard: Students will understand numerical concepts and mathematical operations.

K-4 Benchmark N.1: Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.

o   Demonstrate an understanding of the place-value structure of the base-ten number system:

a. count with understanding and recognize “how many” in sets of objects up to 20

b. read and write whole numbers up to 20

d. connect numerals to the quantities they represent using various physical models

Learning Objectives

          Students will:

·         recognize the numbers and add them from the die.

·         Identify and correctly record the number on their sheet.

·         Construct the correct number of objects to match their number.

Resources

·         Handouts

o   Handouts with 12 large squares

·         Manipulatives

o   5 sets of large dice can be made from kleenex boxes

o   “Six Dinner Sid” by Inga Moore

Procedures

Readiness

A read aloud of “Six Dinner Sid” by Inga Moore will be read to the students.  A greate story about the six meals Sid gets every night.  Students will draw six meals they would like if they were Sid.

o   Students have been writing their numbers up to six at this point.  They will work in their designated groups and form a circle or sit at their desks.  Students will roll begin rolling one die.  Each group will have a set and take turns verbally stating the number to start off.  After one round the students will roll the set of dice.  They will record the numbers of both die into each box.  The third and last box at the end of the row will be used to add the sum of the dice.

·         Examples

I have an example but I could not show it on this word document it is just an example of the squares and how they would be filled in on a students first roll.  Utilizing the number of dots on a die to find the sum.

·         Questions

Can you show me which side of the die has 5…..4…..3….6 etc..sides?

What is the sum of the two dice?  ( Students count them and add by continuing their counting onto the second die.)

Assessment

·         Identify the correct number on each die.

·         Correctly add the number together.

·         Record the numerals correctly on their sheet.

Differentiation

  • Students will continue to use the classroom and library books selected from the public library as tools to find sets of 6.
  • I will make any necessary adjustments to accommodate all students and ensure a safe learning environment.
