Simon J. Ortiz is an author, poet, and storyteller.  He grew up in Deetseyaamah which is a rural village in the area of Acoma.  He includes the struggles that are present in his own life to reach his readers and listeners.  He tells the stories that exist on the land of his people, community, and culture.  The oppression and struggles that he writes of gives hope to many readers.  Although he may not have written many childrens books he is one of my favorite authors. Here are a few of Ortiz's works:
  • The People Shall Continue. San Francisco: Children's Book Press, 1978;revised 1988.
  • Blue and Red. Acoma, NM: Pueblo of Acoma Press, 1982.
  • Going for the Rain: Poems. New York: Harper & Row, 1976.
  •  Woven Stone. Ed. Larry Evers and Ofelia Zepeda. Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1992. *poetry/prose
  • After and Before the Lightning. Ed. Ofelia Zepeda. Tucson, AZ: University of Arizona Press, 1994

"Making Language familiar and accessible to others, bringing it within their grasp and comprehension, is what a writer, teacher, and storyteller does or tries to do.  I've been trying for over thirty years." - Simon J. Ortiz  Woven Stone
