Sunny Dooley

January 29th 2009 Apache Elementary School

Today we were able to meet Mrs. Bradshaw and her students. However we were able to meet another beautiful woman--Ms. Sunny Dooley....  She is from Vanderwagon, New Mexico which is south of Gallup.  She was able to share with our class stories that she shares with everyone.  I love that she said that she loves what she does because it enables us to learn about her and her culture.  She is sharing through oral tradition many of the stories that are told to many Navajo children.  Although it is not as prevalent as I remember I enjoyed listening to her talk.  From the moment that we walked into the classroom I felt comfortable.  She began by speaking conversationally with the audience.  We were able to laugh and relate to many of the things that she was saying.  I found her hilarious and vibrant.  I could tell that she loves what she does because of the expression she has the entire time that she tells her stories.  She enables those in the audience to visualize

Harriet Tubman
Today we had the pleasure of meeting Harriet Tubman.  She instilled some strong words and imagery in my mind.  As I listened to Harriet I felt that I was there and could not understand why her brothers did not follow her.  She was not going to let anyone make her life decisions for her.  She knew that she would make her own choices by escaping.  Her determination and bravery to leave for the North was empowering.  I look forward to hearing more from her.
